Nigeria: Man in Court Over Assault On Wife

A man, Promise Engwe, has been charged before an Abuja Magistrate Court over assaulting and inflicting injury on his wife's head, which contravenes Section 264 of the Penal Code.

His wife, Felicia Garba told the court Friday that the problem began when her husband called her a prostitute without any justification.

Felicia, who spoke through police prosecutor, Chinwe Okehi, alleged that she was discussing with her daughter on November 27 when she overheard her husband gossiping against her and calling her a prostitute while drinking in a beer parlour.

She alleged that she confronted him to find out why he called her a prostitute but he did not reply and later beat her mercilessly at home, where she sustained an injury in the head.

The husband however told the court that he knew the complainant to be his wife and was not aware of the allegations as nothing of such happened between them.

Magistrate Grace Adebayo adjourned the case to January 21, 2013 for hearing.
