Kenya: 'Cheche' for Chan

Five players from the just concluded Cecafa Challenge Cup Kenya squad in Kampala are to play Burundi in the first leg of the CHAN qualifier in Bujumbura on Sunday.

The five include the biggest revelation from the regional tournament and two goal hero David 'Cheche' Ochieng who plays for Tusker, Paul Were of AFC Leopards, Sofapaka left back Abdallah Juma and goalkeeper Duncan Ochieng and Gor Mahia striker, Edwin Lavatsa.

These call-ups contradict an earlier statement from Football Kenya Federation president Sam Nyamweya who wanted members of the Stars squad to Kampala to take a rest. The team returned from Kampala on Sunday following their two week participation in the Cecafa Challenge Cup under assistant coach James Nandwa who was in charge of the team of mainly Under-23 players.

Nandwa said the quintet were included to beef up the senior side that has been hampered by injuries.

"We have decided to drop Gor Mahia's Maurice Odhiambo and Tusker's Peter Opiyo because they both have injuries. Our first training will be this afternoon from 3 pm at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, then tomorrow morning we will train at the City Stadium, because the venue of the match in Bujumbura has artificial turf," said Nandwa who was installed as Henri Michel's assistant by Nyamweya after his impressive showing at the regional tournament in Kampala.

Nandwa added that they could have called up Joackins Atudo to help in defence but he is currently in Dar es Salaam sealing a deal with Tanzania league side Azam FC.

The only notable omission from the main team is Gor Mahia's custodian Jerry Onyango. The team is expected to depart for Bujumbura on Thursday afternoon.

Team: Goalkeepers: Duncan Ochieng and Boniface Oluoch. Defenders: Abdallah Juma, Edwin Wafula, George Owino, James Situma, Eugine Asike, David "Cheche" Ochieng, Chris Wekesa. Midfielders: Anthony "Teddy" Akumu, Osborne Monday, Francis Kahata, Charles Okwemba, Paul Were, and Andrew Tololwa.
