Nigeria: Gunmen Kill Soldier in Maiduguri

Maiduguri — Gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect yesterday ambushed some soldiers guarding a telecommunication mast and a primary school along Chezcon area in Maiduguri.

Witnesses said at least one soldier was killed as a result of gunshot wounds while another one sustained life-threatening injuries.

The incident which happened around 11am forced soldiers to barricade all the roads leading to the area.

Though there is no official confirmation of the killing from the Joint Task Force, JTF, one of the relatives of the deceased soldier who spoke told Weekly Trust on phone from Abuja that military authorities had contacted to break the sad news to them.

"The JTF said Mohammed (my brother) died in Maiduguri and we are awaiting further details from them," he said.

He said he was not certain on the circumstances surrounding the death. "They did not actually tell us how he died...they only said he died today (yesterday)," he said.

When contacted, JTF spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa said he was not aware of the incident.
