Nigeria: Governor Aliyu Was Misled As No Lawmaker Fled Yobe - Speaker

interview

The Speaker of Yobe State House of Assembly, Hon. Adamu Dogo, in this interview with Tony Amokeodo, insists that no government official has fled the state as recently reported in the media. He also speaks on the activities of the Assembly under his watch including the number of bills and resolutions passed since 2011.

How have you been able to lead other members of the Assembly in a state like Yobe?

The entire membership of this very Assembly are a family, associates and political colleagues. The target before us is the development of the state in terms of infrastructure and peace which had been a priority over the years.

We also work as a team and not enemies and speak with one voice mindful of the fact that we are all equal.

Morally, I am a believer that leadership is bestowed on any person by God and that does not create any barrier between any member and the leadership of the Assembly.

But it was alleged in certain quarters that you are very close to Governor Ibrahim Gaidam? Can you tell us the actual situation on the matter?

As a leader of the legislature, I believe there should exist a good rapport between myself and the executive governor who is the chief executive of the state.

It should be clearly understood that the legislature is one of the three key existing pillars in a democratic setting: The Executive, the Legislative and the Judiciary.

The roles of each of these vary, but all are geared towards peaceful development of the state and the counrty at large.

Over the years, there exists cordial relationship between these three arms for democracy to thrive. Government is all about peace, development, cooperation and stability are key to any deveopment. Yobe State is fast developing which is not unconnected with the cordiality that exsits.

It should be categorically stated that being confrontational may hinder any development. You have to have reason to challenge any programme being implemented. You don't have to be confrontational or irrational just to make names.

The Assembly understakes all its constitutional roles as expected including oversight which leads to the current level of development achieved across all sectors in the state. This might have been misconstrued to mean abnormal relationship with the executive.

Some lawmakers are not happy about this development and are even planing to move against you?

I am not aware that any legislator in Yobe State is not happy with the good rapport between myself and the chief executive of the state. As for the move agains me by some lawmakers, you should direct your questions to the relevant honourable members.

What is the Assembly under your able leadership is doing to address the issue of security challenges in Yobe?

I am assuring you that we are collaborating with all stakeholders in tackling the issues of security in the state.

Prayer is number one. In addition to preaching peaceful coexistence between all citizens of Yobe and the country at large irrespective of political or religious diffrence. Nigeria is our only country and our only home which we should strive to build and protect.

The media was recently awash with allegations that most government officials including the lawmakers had fled Yobe for Kano while Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu claimed that the state officials are now operating from Jigawa State. We want you to use this medium to tell Nigerians the true position of things in the state?

Both government officials and the legislature are operating as usual despite security challenges. It is unfair for any person or group to assume that these two critical bodies have fled Yobe to either neighbouring Jigawa or Kano.

All government activities are ongoing, legislative duities are also ongoing despite security challenges.

We are here in the state working tiredlessly to develop the state. To be fair to all who work on assumptions, I suggest they should always be sure of their facts before they either write or comment on issues that may generate backlash.

On the statement acredited to Governor Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger State to the effect that government officials and members had moved to Jigawa State, I am sure he must have been given wrong information. The media is a friend to the Assembly over the years and still remains a friend and partner in progress.

How many bills, motions and resolutions have the Assembly passed since its inauguration in 2011?

The Assembly has passed 10 bills within the period under review. To mention but few are Yobe State Hospitals Management Board Edict of 1989 (Amendment Bill, 2011), Yobe State Scholarships Bill 2011, Yobe State Appropriation and Finance Bills 2011, Yobe State Bukar Abba Ibrahim University Amendment Bill 2011, Yobe State Housing and Property Development Edict of 1999 Amendment Bill 2012 and Yobe State Local Government Law 2001 Amendment Bill, 2011. May I also inform you that several motions were sponsored which resulted into passage of 28 resolutions aimed at improving the living conditions of the people in the state.

What is the legacy you want the people of the state to remember you for?

I want to be seen by all as a fair, just, transparent and an ambassador of peace.
