PAN Nigeria Limited offers a helping hand towards achieving the goals of the UN Decade of Action on Road Safety with its recent donation of an ambulance to the Federal Road Safety Corps, writes OLAOLU OLUSINA
In a bid to reduce frequent loss of lives on the nation's roads through accidents, PAN Nigeria Limited has donated a brand new ambulance to the Kaduna State Sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The donation of the ambulance, which is expected to be deployed on the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway, came as Mr. Jaime Pena was appointed acting Managing Director of the company.
A statement signed by the General Manager, Corporate Resources, Hajiya Mariam Mohammed, stated that the company's Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Alhaji Shehu Sani Dauda, was proceeding on terminal leave , effective November 1 for higher responsibilities and that the Board of Directors had approved the appointment of Pena as acting managing director of the company.
Pena, an accomplished engineer and factory manager, holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University Federico Santa Maria, Chile and a post-graduate degree from University of Chile. His experience in the automobile industry spanned three decades as he was the Deputy General Manager of the Automobile Peugeot (AP) factory in Madrid, Spain before joining PAN as General Manager, Industrial Division, in December 2006. In February 2011, he was appointed Deputy Managing Director, the position he occupied before his new appointment.
Making the donation at the company's premises in Kaduna recently, the acting Managing Director, Pena, restated PAN's commitment to the efforts aimed at reducing excessive lost of lives as a result of road accidents in the country. He added that saving lives is very important to the company, more so, "when our business has to do with the production and manufacturing of vehicles."
Pena pledged to continue to assist the FRSC with the limited resources of the company as a strong stakeholder in the nation's automobile sector.
Receiving the keys of the new ambulance, the Kaduna State Sector Commander, Mr. Olumide Mike Olagunju, who led a delegation from the FRSC said PAN's gesture to donate the ambulance could not have come at a better time.
"The United Nation (UN) has asked member nations to dedicate 2011 to 2020 as a Decade of Action on Road Safety, in which all member nations are expected to play a strong role towards reducing traffic crashes in the world. Your ambulance donation today, is a key towards actualising UN's objective of drastically reducing crashes on our roads, " he said. He explained that the ambulance would no doubt go a long way in reducing deaths at accidents scenes.
According to the Sector Commander, "Your decision to donate this ambulance is not only generous, it is also in line with humanity as the lives this donation will save cannot be quantified."
Also speaking at the occasion, the Unit Commander of Kakau, the primary beneficiary of the donation, Mr. Ademola Obafemi, showered encomium on PAN for the donation. "We were having challenges of how to respond promptly to accident victims and we came to PAN to be rescued and within a week our request was granted. I thank God that this donation came to Kakau unit during my tenure as the Commander," the apparently excited Unit Commander said.
