The news of the death of Governor Patrick Yakowa sounded like an unbelievable rumour to many Kaduna residents especially top government functionaries.
It came when many residents were preoccupied with social activities, especially the many wedding ceremonies and other events that took place Saturday.
Many people did not hear about the incident until around 6 pm when many residents were battling with the chaotic traffic to get back to their homes. Some of those who heard it dismissed it as one of the wicked rumours Nigerians often peddled.
But as the news of the death spread, there was mounting anxiety among top government functionaries who, themselves could not establish the fact whether their principal was involved in the helicopter crash.
"We have been hearing the rumours that our governor died in a helicopter crash but we don't know how true this, is" said one of the aides in a telephone interview.
But another aide who spoke could not control his emotion as it was glaring that he was sobbing when he answered our reporter's telephone call. "That is the rumour we are hearing, we don't know yet, but are trusting God for everything," he added in a very emotional and shaky voice.
Most commissioners and other aides of the governor switched off their phones while others refused to answer calls. All efforts by journalists to get official confirmation from the Kaduna state government was fruitless as all key government functionaries could not be reached. Elsewhere in the city, there was calm.
