Nigeria: Nigerien Docked Over N3.35 Million Scam

A 45-year-old Nigerien citizen, Assoumane Ibrahim, has been arraigned before an Upper Area Court sitting in Karu, Abuja for allegedly collecting N3.35 million from one Aminu Janjari, under the pretence that he would cure him of evil spirits.

Police prosecutor, Silas Nampam, informed the court that the complainant, who resides at Mogadishu Barracks, reported at Nyanya Police Station that sometime in 2009 in a mosque, the accused met him and told him he had evil spirits in his body.

He alleged further that the accused claimed to have powers to cast off such spirits and demanded for N70,000 from the complainant to buy tools for the work.

He accused Assoumane of giving the complainant some charms and collecting N 3.35 million.

The prosecutor said the accused confessed to the offence during police investigation and contravened Section 324 of the Penal Code.

When the charge was read, the accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N3.5 million by Judge Umar Yusuf Kagarko, who adjourned the case to January 21, 2013 for hearing.
