Liberia: Catholic Hospital Won't Close

The management of St. Joseph Catholic Hospital has reassured the public saying the hospital is not shutting down at the end of this year.

The Hospital in a release signed by its Medical Director Mikel Tellaeche over the weekend said the hospital will not be closed.

Tellaeche statement follows months of very serious financial problems that seem to have threatened the operations of the Hospital.

During those period, there were SOS calls to address the situation or the hospital would have closed by end of this year

But in the statement released over the weekend the management said there have been an increase in the annual subsidy from the Liberian Government from US$125, 000 to US$231, 000 and that the hospital is running an Annual Budget US$1.8.

The hospital authorities further added that another factor it won't be shutting down activities are because it has increased its activities and revenue, controlling its current expenditure to afford increment in staff salaries and increasing the support of the hospital from donors.

It said it is presently collaborating with the Health & Social Welfare Ministry in teaching and training the new medical generations through programs with the A. M. Dogloiti Medical College of the University of Liberia, the Mother Pattern College of Heath Sciences and the Cuttington University amongst others, while the Brother Hospital in Spain with its Technical and Training Support will continue.

Due to the increment in the budgetary allotment, the Hospital said it has now introduced new specialties, diagnostics and other services to include a modern intensive care unit, orthopedics and trauma, ambulance and medical check-ups services and trauma emergencies, outpatient visits in the afternoons.

The statement comes at a time the hospital is celebrating its 50 years of providing Quality Health Care Deliveries in Liberia as a Mission Hospital, a Liberian National Health Service and a Training hospital as well as a Private Hospital. The Hospital said several contacts and negotiations with local and international partners have been made over the last few months.
