Egypt: Contacts Underway to Suspend Israel's Decision to Demolish Egyptian Memorial in West Bank

Egypt started contacts to suspend Israeli's decision to demolish a memorial of Egyptian soldiers in the West Bank, Egyptian Ambassador to the Palestinian Authority Yasser Othman said.

Othman told MENA that Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Amr asked him to start necessary contacts with the Israeli authorities to bring to a halt the decision to remove the memorial.

The memorial, located in Beit Nouba village in western Ramallah, honors a group of Egyptian soldiers who were killed in an Israeli bombing after refusing to abandon their positions and get out from the area and escape to Jordan back during the 1948 war.

Israeli authorities have decided to destroy the memorial and other adjacent buildings in the village under the pretext that they were unlicensed.

A number of Palestinian residents have staged a protest yesterday to condemn the Israeli decision.
