From the way he conducts himself, one can not take him for serious unless he is busy at the sewing machine.
At last week's Afrikan Fashion awards held at Cayenne, the dreadlocked Latif Kasumba Madoi, a fashion tutor at Tina International School of Beauty and Fashion Designing, stunned the crowd when he styled five dresses into fine pieces in 18 minutes.
This live creation has won him several recognitions in different countries including Congo Brazzaville, France, Niger and Ireland. For Madoi, this is not simply magic but training he acquired at Zully Bet Autelier, France. Capt Mike Mukula, the Soroti municipality MP, wished that Madoi would train more youths in fashion.
"The ministry of Education and Sports has introduced Skilling Uganda, to benefit individuals like Madoi so that they can train others," Mukula, who was guest of honour, said.
To spice up the event were artistes such as Juliana Katamba, Bobi Wine, Josteri and Afri-Dance. Sylvia Owori displayed some of her African Vintage and Forever Love collections. Other designers showcasing were Raphael Kasule, Dorah Barungi and Bulenzi Tonny.
Garina Tatarinova, an internationally renowned Russian designer, showcased collections of ruffled gowns with an African touch.
Daudi Baraka, the chairman of the fashion walk awards, attributed the big turnout to regional recognition of designers. He is hopeful that next year the event will have designers from all the East African countries.
