Namibia: Basson, Gressmann Win Swakop Open

MICHAU Basson and Kerstin Gressman again proved to be a cut above the rest as they retained their Swakopmund Open tennis titles on Sunday.

While this is Basson's second national tennis tournament victory, 18-year-old Gressmann made it a hat trick with her win at the three-day competition held at the Swakopmund Tennis Club courts.

Basson said it was a great court to have played on and he hopes to have top South African players participate at next year's tournament.

"We'll do what we can to make it the most popular tennis tournament in the country - but also on an international level when we have the South African players coming on board," he said.

Alexander Forbes sponsored N$25 000 worth of prize money for the fourth Swakopmund Open and Namibia Tennis Association CEO Laurie Peters is confident that the tournament can only become better.

"There was a similar tournament in the past, but that disappeared. Thanks to the Swakopmund Tennis Club, we can revive this competition and make it one of the top tennis competitions in Namibia," Peters said.
