School children in Liberia are sending their condolences to the victims of the Connecticut school shooting that left 20 children dead.

The Liberian children on Tuesday presented a giant-size sympathy card and flowers to the United States Embassy in memory of the lives lost during the shooting attack.

Seven-year old Yaya Bette said: "It is not fair because other people's children were killed for nothing ... so we have come to say sorry."

U.S. Ambassador to Liberia Deborah Malac said she was "deeply touched" and the ceremony showed her that "everyone shares the sorrow of the people of Newtown, Connecticut."

Liberia suffered a disastrous 14-year civil war which ended in 2003 and remains one of the world's poorest countries. lawmakers in the US have called on Congress and the gun industry to come together on a "sensible, reasonable approach" to curbing high-powered, assault weapons like those used in the Connecticut school shooting last week.
