Rwanda: Ethiopian Prime Minister Jets in for Jubilee Anniversary

Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn arrived in Kigali this morning to attend the Rwandese Patriotic Front Silver Jubilee celebrations.

Hailemariam, the chairman of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), the political party in power, became prime minister after the death of Meles Zenawi in August, 2012.

Meles was among foreign leaders who were decorated for supporting the RPF during the liberation struggle.

The anniversary celebration, taking place at the Amahoro stadium in Kigali, is also attended by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who worked with some senior RPF leaders while they were still refugees.

President Paul Kagame is expected to address thousands at the event later today.

RPF was born in December 1987 in Uganda, three years before it launched an armed liberation struggle against the genocidal regime in Kigali.

It took power on July 4, 1994.
