Sudan: Ibn Chambas Appointed to Head Unamid

New York — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, announced the appointment of Mohamed Ibn Chambas as the Joint Special Representative for Darfur and Head of the African Union and United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in a press statement issued on Thursday, 20 December.

Mohamed Ibn Chambas, a prominent Ghanian diplomat, served recently as the Secretary General of the African, Caribbean, Pacific Group of States (ACP). Chambas also served as Deputy Foreign Secretary of Ghana and Deputy Minister of Education and was involved in the mediation efforts in Liberia between 1991 and 1996.

Chambas replaces Ibrahim Gambari and brings to the position extensive experience after a long and distinguished career in both international and governmental fora, the statement added.
