Kenya: Low Voter Roll in North Eastern Compared to Census Results

IEBC has registered few voters in eight Northern Kenya districts whose 2009 census results were cancelled. Kenya National Bureau of Statistics nullified results of the districts after they showed an increase of about a million people.

In Mandera Central, Mandera East, Mandera West, Lagdera, Wajir East, Turkana Central, Turkana South and Turkana North, IEBC registered 126,814 voters while KNBS recorded a population of 2,350,696 people.

The target was 1,077,273 in the 18 counties of Garisa, Wajir and Mandera but by Sunday's tally, those registered were 319,550. Based on the KNBS figure, the area should have recorded as many registered voters as Nairobi which has so far registered 1.5 million voters against an estimated 1,463,105.
