South Africa: Attack On E-Toll Website Foiled

Pretoria — A possible cyber-attack on the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) e-toll website was thwarted on Thursday.

"The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) confirms that a bid to launch a Denial of Service attack on the e-toll website has been thwarted. The attack was detected by Gauteng e-toll operator, Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) on Thursday afternoon and successfully blocked at the external firewall level," said the company in a statement.

SANRAL said it was pleased with ETC's preparedness and handling of the situation and assured e-toll account holders and all road users of the integrity of the system and the information it holds.

"An investigation is underway to determine the source of the attack. The system remains fully functional," said SANRAL.
