Zambia: Sandu, Sakutamba Top ZNS Sports Awards Ceremony

JUDOKA, Esther Sandu and budding Under-20 boxer, Ben Sakutamba yesterday dominated the 2012 Zambia National Service (ZNS) Sports awards ceremony in Lusaka.

Sandu, winner of a bronze medal at last year's All Africa Games held in Mozambique, scooped the Sports-Woman-of-the-Year award and also picked up the Judoka-of-the-Year award.

Sakutamba was crowned Boxer of the Year and also got the ZNS commandant award for being the Best Boxer in the Service.

At the colourful awards ceremony at the ZNS Makeni Garrison mess yesterday, Sandu was rewarded for being instrumental in helping her team win various judo accolades during the year.

Sakutamba was recognised for winning a gold medal at the just-ended Supreme Council for Sports in Africa (SCSA) Zone Six Under-20 Games held in Lusaka.

Other recipients were chess players Kelvin Chumfya, who was named the Most Consistent Player while Gillian Bwalya was voted Player of the Year in the chess category.

In karate, the Most Consistent Player award went to Grace Kamwenya and Emily Lombe was the Best Karateka of the Year in the women's category.

For the men in karate, the honours went to Kelvin Hamoonga as the Most Consistent Player with Melvin Siwale scooping the Best Karateka of the Year accolade.

In athletics, Felistus Chitoshi was voted the Most Consistent in the Year, while Mercy Kalunga emerged the Athlete of the Year in the women's category.

In the men's category, Makezia Zangata was awarded as the Most Consistent while Mathews Mutahnya won the Best Athlete of the Year award.

Carol Mfululuka was awarded the Most Consistent in women's rugby while Mary Mbewe emerged Player of the Year while in the men's category, Fabious Chipoya was the Most Consistent Player with Tom Kaloba being crowned the Player of the Year award.

Lucy Jere was awarded as netball's Player of the Year with Getrude Kalipinji being the Most Consistent Player.

In basketball, Obery Mulenga was voted the Player of the Year and Mwaba Mwelwa picked the Most Consistent Player award while in Volleyball, Binwell Kawimba was awarded Most Consistent Player with Lusaya Lusaya scooping the Player of the Year accolade.

Pauline Nyirenda and Sharon Nampemba were rewarded as the Most Consistent and Player of the Year in the women football category, respectively.

Green Eagles' Sachimo Sangawa was voted Footballer of the Year while Samuel Sintolongo of Young Eagles was the Most Consistent Player.
