Machakos governor aspirant Dr Alfred Mutua is a "project" of Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Kangundo MP Johnson Muthama claimed yesterday.

Muthama said he had told Kalonzo he should not impose Mutua on Machakos county residents."We know very little about Dr Mutua though he has held a big position in government for almost a decade. He did not do anything tangible for Machakos in the years he was the government spokesman," Muthama said.

The MP, who is eyeing Machakos the senator seat, said he would find it very difficult to work with Mutua if they are both elected. He said he preferred former Water minister Mutua Katuku. Muthama was speaking after he opened the new Kangundo CDF offices.

He was accompanied by Katuku and several aspirants from Kangundo and the newly created Matungulu constituency.

Muthama, who is credited with having hammered out a deal with Eeducation minister Mutula Kilonzo to have Kalonzo join the Cord coalition, said Katuku was the best candidate for the position of governor. He said Katuku is well to the people and had a proven track record as a former Water minister and Mwala MP.

Efforts to reach to Mutua to comment on the issue were fruitless as he did not take the call or reply to an SMS sent to him. The VP's spokesman Kaplich Barsito could not be reached for comment either.

Mutua is a front runner for the Machakos governor seat along with Kathiani MP and assistant minister for Youth Affairs Wavinya Ndeti.

Mutua has been vigorously campaigning in Machakos on a platform of poverty alleviation through job creation. He has also produced a blueprint of how to end the perennial water shortages that plague the county. Ndeti is campaigning on a platform of women's empowerment and poverty alleviation.

At Muthama's meeting in Kangundo, Katuku said he has been holding talks with Ndeti with a view to joining forces to vie as governor and running mate.

Others going for the Machakos governor seat include former Central Bank of Kenya deputy governor Nzioki Kibua, ex-intelligence officer Jimmy Mumina, engineer Titus Ndundu, consultant Tony Wambua and former chief executive of the Export Processing Zone authority Mutule Kilonzo. So far there are only two aspirants for senator -- Muthama and law scholar Boniface Kabaka.
