Kenya: Activist Charged With Assault

An Embu political activist was yesterday charged with assaulting the younger brother of Manyatta MP Emilio Kathuri. Simon Njiru denied causing grievous body harm to Lawrence Kathuri near the Embu Stadium on December 10.

The prosecution said the suspect found Kathuri chatting with his friends at 8pm and started abusing and attacking him. Kathuri, accompanied by by his friends, reported the matter at the Embu police station before seeking treatment at the Embu Provincial General Hospital. He was treated and discharged.

Njiru was arrested at the weekend and held at the Embu police station. Manyatta TNA hopeful John Gitari, who visited Njiru at the police station accused MP Kathuri of the arrest.

He said Kathuri wants to intimidate Njiru who is his campaigner. Embu senior resident magistrate Robinson Oigara released Njiru on a Sh12,000 bail. The case will be heard on February 8.
