Kenya: Safari in June

Safari Rally and the KQ East African Safari Classic Rally mark the highlight of the 2013 Motorsports calendar released on Wednesday.

A full motorsports council meeting held at the Kenya Motor Sports Federation (KMSF) secretarial soon after the Annual General Meeting (AGM), fixed the KCB Safari kick off on June 5-7.

The 2013 rally season though starts on January 26- 27 in Voi and Mombasa Rally will close the rally calendar in November preceded by the Guru Nanak Rally in October. The Guru Nanak organised by Sikh Union will be held in Makindu.

The 2012 Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) Division One showdown was one of the most competitive in the recent years with all of the top drivers in identically powered Group N cars dominating the scene.

However, Subaru crews found themselves on the receiving end whenever they took the fight to "high-flying" Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 9 adversaries with no victory forthcoming for the former thus far in two seasons; much to their chagrin.

The Classic Rally which traverses some of the most picturesque sites in the East African region runs from November 21-29.

So far, Porsches dominate the Classic entry list. Six Porsches will come from Belgium and three of those are entered by Kronos Vintage for Jean-Pierre Mondron, Stephan Meyers and Gérard Brianti. Also from Belgium in a Porsche 911 is that stalwart of the Safari Classic--and Paris-Dakar's Gérard Marcy . Local hopes for success lie with Aslam Khan in Porsche 911 after making debut in 2011 Safari Classic.

The annual Rhino Charge organised by the Rhino Ark Charitable Trust will be held in June while the annual Concours de Elegance organised by the Alpha Romeo Owners Club will be held on September 28-29. The motorsports calendar revs off with the annual awards of KMSF on January 12-13. This will be followed by the opening round of the Kenya National Motocross Championship on January 19-20.
