Sudan: 'Uncontrolled Spread of Weapons Main Reason for Instability'

El Geneina — In a meeting organized by the commission for disarmament, demobilization and re-integration on Friday, 21 December in El Geneina, Governor of West Darfur, Haider Gaulkuma Ateem, stressed the need for disarmament of civilians.

Additionally, he emphasized the need for weapons to be limited to the regular troops. He explained that the uncontrolled spread of weapons in the state is allegedly the main reason for security issues, unrest and instability in El Geneina.

The governor expressed his full commitment to the commission's process of registering and controlling of arms. He called on the leaders of the native administration to assist security agencies in controlling and regulating holding of arms to achieve security and stability.
