French President François Hollande on Thursday (December 20th) told the Algerian Parliament that his country's colonisation of Algeria was "brutal and unfair".
While the French president did not apologise for colonialism, he did acknowledge the suffering it caused, specifically pointing to events at Setif.
"We have a duty to speak the truth about the violence, injustices, massacres and torture," AFP quoted Hollande as saying. He added that doing so strengthened French-Algerian ties.
