Nigeria: Kicking Off!

analysis

As a mark of honour, we have dedicated our cover to Super Eagles lanky defender, Efe Ambrose whose club, Celtic in Scotland has drawn Italian champions Juventus in the round of 16 of the lucrative UEFA Champions League.

Although many may doubt very much how the Scottish side will survive against Juventus, Ambrose believes the underdog status ascribed to his team is going to work in their favour. It will be recalled that in a group which had Spanish giants Barcelona, Celtic dared all the odds to remain in the Champions League.

And in keeping with our tradition, we have served you the insightful interview with one of the rising youngsters in Nigerian football, Solomon Kwambe. The Sunshine Stars right full back who hails from Benue State had his debut for the Eagles in the international friendly against Venezuela. He spoke on the chances of the Super Eagles in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and his blossoming career. It is one interview you cannot afford to miss.

On Thursday, the draw for the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League was conducted and the pairings is what will dominate discussions in football circles for sometimes. The fixtures have indeed rekindled old rivalries with 'the special one', Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid handed the daunting task of going past English giants, Manchester United. The other mouth watering fixture no doubt is the one pitching Italian giants, AC Milan with Spanish 'football terrorists', Barcelona. As usual, there are the weekend fixtures and the league tables to keep you abreast of the table toppers and those struggling to stay afloat.

Back home, we also have for you a feature by a sports commentator on the giant strides of Yobe State in sports especially in the area of provision of standard facilities for accelerated sports development. The aim is to put Yobe State among the best sporting states in the country.

We most sincerely wish to congratulate those African football stars who were honoured at this year's Glo-CAF awards which held on Thursday in Accra, Ghana. Although Nigerians did not feature prominently, it is our fervent hope that there would be the much needed resurgence and the days of glory would return.

It is on this positive note that we wish you all a splendid weekend!
