The National Elections Commission (NEC) through its Acting Chairman, Counselor Elizabeth J. Nelson, has disclosed that the NEC desires to submit a draft of the proposed New Elections Law of Liberia to the Liberian Legislature early next year for debate and subsequent passage into law. Among other things, the initiative is aimed at reforming the electoral laws of the country.

Cllr. Nelson made the disclosure on Friday, December 21, 2012 when she held her year-end briefing with media editors at the Commission's headquarters in Sinkor, Monrovia. According to Cllr. Nelson, the NEC also desires to continue the process of strengthening and enhancing the professional capacity of the administration of the Commission at all levels in the New Year through strategic institutional development programs.

At the same time, she disclosed that the NEC is under obligation to conduct a special election for half of the Liberian Senate in line with Article 46 of the Liberian Constitution. In this vein, she stated the Commission will begin a vigorous planning process of the 2014 Special Election with the improvement of Civic/Voter Education programmes using strategic approaches during the new year.

"We also desire to continue the process of continuously enhancing the capacity of political parties through specialized trainings and regular consultations. We will also continue to engage civil society organizations and the Committees on Elections of the both Houses of the Liberian Legislature," the acting NEC boss told the media editors.

Meanwhile, the acting NEC boss thanked members of the press for the partnership between the NEC and them and expressed the hope that this cordial relationship will continue to forge ahead in the country's quest to sustain democracy through the conduct of free, fair and transparent elections in Liberia.
