Liberia: Gov't Breaks Ground for Pavement of Major Streets in Voinjama

The Government of Liberia (GoL) has officially broken ground for the pavement of all the major streets in Lofa County's capitol, Voinjama. Voinjama District is one of six districts located in Lofa County, Liberia. The roads to be paved are measured 6.86 kilometers.

Official ceremonies of the ground breaking for the pavement of the major streets of Voinjama City were held Saturday, December 22, 2012 at the Lofa County Hall and Voinjama Main Street respectively in Lofa County. Speaking at the ground breaking program, Liberia's Vice President, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, said the project is an outcome of electing responsible leadership.

VP Boakai, who also dedicated several completed feeder roads project in the county, said the pavement of the road and construction of feeder roads are critical to the county's development agenda and the country at large. According to him, the health and educational sectors will also get improved when there are good roads in the country.

"As we all can see, lots of good things are happening in your interest. You elected a responsible government and we are paying back. This is the work of the Executive through the Ministry of Public Works and your lawmakers you elected," he stated. He said the government desires to see more developmental initiatives for the people of Liberia.

The city of Voinjama, which is one of Liberia's oldest cities, has never been paved since the country gained independence almost two centuries ago. For his part, Public Works Minister, Attorney Samuel Kofi Woods, vowed that the roads to be paved will be of great quality. "We will not do any small job. This will be a high quality road with good drainage system," he said.

Minister Woods disclosed that the main streets of Voinjama will be constructed with sidewalks as any other streets in the world are. He stressed the need for community participation in every development process of the country. According to him, the locals are the direct custodians of the project, and as such, they should benefit from employment opportunity during the project.

    This developement is coming over a century late, for such a major city. Please hurry up and stop the too much talking, and symbolic ground breakings around the country. We have a saying, "actions speaks louder then words." I thinks the government will do itself a service by not promising the Liberian people in words but, in deeds.
