Egypt: International Bid On Wind Farm to Be Announced

The Electricity sector has determined 6 sites for wind energy in some governorates nationwide, each extending over a 150 square kilometer area, with the purpose of setting up windmills.

The Electricity and Energy sector in Egypt said that it will announce an international bid on the establishment of a 600-megawatt wind farm in the Gulf of Suez area.

The bid comes in line with the sector's strategy to promote the use of renewable energy, according to Minister of Electricity and Energy Mahmoud Balba in statements on Sunday23/12/2012.

The power sector is keen on realizing its plan that aims at having renewable energy contribute by 20% to the total electricity produced in Egypt by 2020 and 12% of which is to be generated by wind energy, he added.

Balba said that the lands will be given to investors according to the usufruct system to promote the use of renewable energy from both the sun and the wind, expecting that this step will make up 12 % of the country's total power consumption.
