Somalia: Minister Says International Aid Short of Expectation

Somali Minister for Social Affairs, Ms. Maryan Qasim Aweys, in a press conference in Mogadishu on Saturday said international aid "does not adhere to the needs" in Somalia and demanded new changes.

She said Somalia has emerged from the transitional period, and the new Somali Federal Government "wants to see new changes and expects all international agencies to present their plans and consult with the Somali Federal Government prior to aid operations in the country".

She noted the previous practices of aid agencies which were operating in Somalia without oversight from Somali authorities, and emphasized that "aid operations should match the expectations designed by the Somali Federal Government".
