Illegal drugs on the increase among Zanzibar youth.

Zanzibar — A MAN convicted of murder hanged himself in his cell at Kilimani in Zanzibar, Urban West Regional Police Commander (RPC), Aziz Juma has said. Daudi Mese (36), who hanged himself with his own shirt, was among two people who died in separate incidents last week in Zanzibar municipality, the RPC said.

The motive behind Mese taking his own life is unknown. In his weekly press briefing, the RPC said a man identified as Said Ali (38), was found dead allegedly due to an overdose. "The deceased was said to be a drug user as in one of his hands had a syringe," the RPC explained.

He said the third incident was of a seven-year-old girl who was seriously injured after her clothes caught fire from a candle as she moved into the toilet at night. The RPC said that the injured child was still nursing the wound at Mnazi-Mmoja Hospital.
