Egypt: HEC - Majority of Egyptians Support Draft Constitution

The High Elections Commission (HEC) has announced on Tuesday 25/12/2012 that majority of Egyptians voted in favor of Egypt's draft constitution.

In a press conference on Tuesday, head of the HEC Counselor Samir Abu el-Maati said % 63.8 of Egyptians said 'yes' against % 36.2 said 'no' in the referendum.

He added that the turnout reached up to % 32.9 of eligible voters.

The total number of eligible voters is estimated at 51,919,067, out of them 10,755,012 voters said yes and 6,061,101 voters said no in the referendum on Egypt's new constitution, he said.

Abu el-Maati noted that the HEC has seriously investigated all the complaints, stressing that the HEC was the body that suggested holding a referendum on two stages.

"The HEC fully oversaw the two-round referendum," he said, reiterating that the balloting process was overseen by full judicial supervision.
