Nigeria: Akwa Ibom Oil Spills - Senate Demands Update From MDAs, Others

The Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology has called on the Ministry of Environment, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and Mobil Oil Company to immediately furnish it with an up-to-date information on two oil spill incidents that occurred in Ibeno and Idoho areas of Akwa Ibom State.

According to a release signed by Chairman of the Senate Committee, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki, he expressed worry that within the last one month alone, there have been reports of two oil spills within close proximity of Mobil Producing Nigeria Operations with no official report made to the Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology.

Decrying the frequency of the spills, Senator Saraki further accused the Ministry of Environment as well as Mobil Nigeria for being lackadaisical in providing necessary information to the Senate Committee to assist it in carrying out its oversight function.

Senator Saraki stated that NOSDRA should "immediately furnish it with necessary information on the spill areas.
