Uganda: Doctors in Nebanda Case Released

The Buganda Road Chief Magistrate has this afternoon released Kinkizi East MP Dr Chris Baryomunsi and his co-accused Dr Sylvester Onzivua on a non-cash bail of Shs 1m each.

The two doctors were charged with conspiracy to commit a felony when they allegedly conspired to unlawfully obtain body samples of the late Butaleja Woman MP Cerinah Nebanda. Dr Onzivua was separately charged with abuse of office.

Baryomunsi was represented by Bugweri MP Abdu Katuntu and Fred Mukasa Mbidde. They argued that the charged against Baryomunsi were unfortunate and unconstitutional given that the accused had been held for more than 48 hours.

Six members of parliament acted as sureties for both doctors. They include Mathisa Nsubuga (Bukoto West), Amuriat Oboi (Kumi County), Brenda Nabukenya (Luwero Woman), Muwanga Kivumbi (Butambala), David Bahati (Ndorwa West), and Jalia Bintu (Masindi Woman). Onzivua and Baryomunsi will next appear on January 28, 2013 when the case comes up for mention.
