The Mavoko Municipal Council has completed the ratification on 3,500 plots in Athi River and the title deeds are expected anytime soon, Mayor Patrick Makau has said.
The mayor said most plot owners had developed property on the strength of temporary occupation licenses and put up permanent buildings in contravention of the law as their land had not been ratified.
He added that with the issuance of the title deeds, several land cases will be solved in the industrial town. "Land allocations in Athi river has always been done from the Lands ministry in Nairobi as the past political leadership failed to ensure that the land in Mavoko was held in trust by the council on behalf of the government," Makau said.
He added that as a result, powerful individuals had grabbed land in Mavoko and displaced the rightful owners bringing about untold suffering like the Syokimau demolitions.
Makau said the Mavoko municipality boundary had been moved as it is not the 693 kilometre square it was originally. The mayor was addressing a meeting at the Mavoko council chambers that was attended by his deputy Stanley Shivairo and Athi River DO Philip Lemarasai.
