Gambia: Rice Growers Quartet Released On Bail

The president of the New Executive Committee of the Central River Region Rice Growers' Association for the Jahally and Panchar perimeter Haruna Kassama who was arrested on the 9th of December 2012 by the Brikamaba Police and put in the Remand wind of the Janjanbureh Prison on the 11th of the same month, has be released after spending 15 days in Police and prison detention.

The Quartet (four) of the New Executive Committee of the Central River Region Rice Growers' Association for the Jahally and Pancharr perimeter namely:- Haruna Kassama, Makang Jara, Alhagi Banu Njie and Jobe Sanneh who were arrested by the Brikamaba Police and put in the Remand wind of the Janjanbureh Prison, were released on Monday 24th of December 2012 .

When contacted earlier on the issue, the Police Public Relations Officer ASP David Kujabi informed this reporter that the president of the New Executive Committee of the Central River Region Rice Growers' Association for the Jahally and Panchar perimeter were arrested by the Brikamaba Police and put in the Remand wind of the Janjanbureh Prison by an order of the Magistrates' Court in which they facing trial.

Readers would recall that Haruna Kassama was elected president of the Central River Rice Growers' Association for the Jahally and Panchar perimeter in the association Annual General Meeting held in Brikamaba on Thursday 5th January 2012.

By the 5th of next month, his committee will be a year old yet no handing over has been done by his predecessors for them to start their operation, instead he and his Executive Committee members are faced with a single charge of giving false information to a public office.

According to the particulars of offence, Haruna Kassama, Ousman Mballow, Alhagi Banno Njie, Jobe Sanneh, Lang K. Fatty, Mankan Jarra and Sidat Conteh on or about the 7th day of April 2012 in Banjul, the Gambia unlawfully gave information to the president through the Secretary General's office of the President, information you knew was false.

All the accused pleaded not guilty and were all granted bail in the sum of D2000 with a Gambian Surety who must deposit his or her National Identity Card.
