Sudan: Opposition Leaders Gezira State Released After 16 Days Detention

Wad Madani — Six leaders of the National Consensus Forces in Al Gezira state have been released on Thursday, 27 December, after spending 16 days in the security detention facility of Al Saraya in Wad Medani.

The security apparatus arrested the leader of the Communist Party and a prominent member, Hashim Mirghani and Abdul Fattah Beidab, one of the leaders of the Popular Congress Party, Mohamed Zain, and leader of Alnasiri party, Ahmed Abdul Rahim as well as Sadiq Haj Yousef and Majdi Salim of the Sudanese Congress Party.

Hashim Mirghani, leader of the Communist Party in Al Gezira state, claimed that the main purpose of their arrest was to isolate the leaders from funeral processions, out of fear that they would contribute in transforming those processions to political rallies, speeches and demonstrations in the state. He added to Radio Dabanga that he was not interrogated at all while the others were asked 'routine questions'.
