CARGO shipment in Tanga port has been growing for the last three consecutive years, stimulating investment process in the region.
Speaking about the development of the Port here yesterday, the Port Operation Manager, Halifa Mkwizu said that the port was now more busy than ever before.
He said the improvement and activeness of the port has in a way influenced the investment process in the region, as the investors are sure of using the port business operations to minimize transport costs.
Giving statistics, he said, in the year 2010, the port handled a total of 509,021 tons of different cargo for export and import, including containerized, conventional and liquid bulk cargo. Clarifying on the matter he said, out of the number of tonnage, about 358,601 tons were of container-cargo, conventional and liquid bulk cargo.
He further said exports in the same year reached 150,420 tons. In the year 2011 he said the import reached tons 378,390 of containerized, conventional and liquid bulk cargo, while exports were 144,737 for containerized and conventional cargo, making a total of 523,127 tons handled for the whole year.
He further said this year the handling would surpass the two past years, thus making the port recording a good performance for the three consecutive years. He said the achievements have been recorded following efforts of the management of improving the port in the past three years.
"The capacity of the port has increased due to implementation of port development programme, including improvement of its infrastructure and working equipment that the port has undergone," he said.
He also commended the marketing department for creditable job of dealing with customers and inviting them to use the Tanga port. He said customers now have no reason to jump to other port outside the region or outside the country because the service at Tanga port was now the cheapest and quickest.
He promised tremendous performance and more success in coming years so the achieved performance record was maintained to the convenience of customers.
