Zambia: Gunmen Shoot, Kill Lusaka Woman

A THIRTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD woman in Lusaka has been shot dead when she unknowingly raised alarm at the time bandits were robbing a trader.

The sad incident happened on Saturday around 22:45 hours in Kalingalinga Township when Jane Chiona who was conducting business at a makeshift stall went to see what was happening in a shop next to her stall out of curiosity.

Oblivious to her, the owner of the shop a Mr Castro Chibala was at the time on the receiving end of an attack by three criminals who were armed with a pistol.

The gunmen robbed him of K3 million cash and mobile phone talk-time for all networks worth K2.5 million. In the ensuing confusion, the noise attracted the woman who walked towards the shop.

When the criminals saw the woman curiously approaching the shop, one of them opened fire and killed her on the spot. She was shot in the chest at point-blank range.

Her body is in the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary awaiting post-mortem.

Police spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela confirmed the shooting incident which comes barely a week after a Lusaka business executive Francis Phiri shot dead an 18 year-old boy John Mpundu in an attempt to stop a fight in Chawama Township in Lusaka.

Mr Phiri had come out of his shop but got a punch instead and retaliated by shooting the victim in the chest before a mob descended on him. He has since been charged with murder.

In North-Western Province, police have apprehended a woman for allegedly killing her two-year-old baby boy around 21:00 hours on Christmas eve.

Maureen Kamanga, aged 20, abandoned her son in an open house and went to a night club where she was taken by a companion and spent the night at his house.

"When she went back home, she found the child lying on the ground dead at the neighbour's yard. It is believed that the child was carried away by water due to heavy rain," Ms Kanjela said.

In Lusaka's Chawama Township, a seven-year-old girl died on the spot after being hit by a vehicle on Saturday around 17:00 hours on Chifundo Road.

On the same day, a 45-year-old man died in a road accident after being hit by a Benz truck around 18:30 hours on Chikumbi Road near Friday's Corner pub in Chikumbi area Lusaka.

In Eastern Province a cyclist died after being hit by a Fuso Fighter truck on Saturday around 15:00 hours at Chomba Village, in Chief Pikamalaza in Lundazi.
