Eritrea: Revised Maritime Tariffs Take Effect in 2013

Massawa — The Ports Authority in Massawa city indicated that the revised maritime tariffs would be operational as of January 2013. It made the statement at a seminar conducted in the port city with stakeholders, Administrations and other bodies.

Mr. Kidane Gebremichael, director general of the Marine Transport Department, gave extensive briefings regarding investment prospects related to the maritime sphere, and explained that the Government is striving to upgrade the capacity of ports through laying key infrastructures. Stating that the reviewing of maritime tariffs was accomplished in three stages, he disclosed that the tariffs which encourage exports are cost-based, flat rate and relevant to new operational activities, thus becoming supplementary to the new investment environment in the country.

Mr. Dawit Melake, General Manager at the Ports Authority, said on his part that the seminar was vital in creating awareness among related businesses, and called on potential investors to become beneficiaries of the new opportunities.

The participants expressed satisfaction with the seminar.
