Kenya: Mathare Arson Suspects Arraigned in Court

Residents (file photo) :One person was killed and 20 homes torched in revenge attacks in Mathare slum, Nairobi.

A Nairobi court has today charged 20 youths believed to have been behind the Mathare slum attacks on Friday with arson.

The suspects who appeared before senior principal magistrate Lucy Mbugua denied the charges and will be remanded in police custody for seven days to enable police complete investigation.

The 20 were among 38 who were arrested following a swoop by police after skirmishes between rival gangs in the area erupted.

Starehe OCPD Samuel Anampiu confirmed the arrests saying that most of the suspects who were netted in the operation were known criminals who police have been looking for.

Police yesterday patrolled the Mathare 3C area to avert fresh incidents of violence that had been instigated by rival groups who police identified as criminals gangs that have been operating in the area.
