Tanzania: Man Drowns On New Year's Eve

A 70-year-old man, Simon Mjavike, failed to see the New Year at the stroke of midnight on Monday because he drowned while swimming in River Luana in Ludewa District, Njombe Region.

Njombe Regional Police Commissioner (RPC) Fulgence Ngonyani told the 'Daily News' that the old man was drunk when he met his death. The RPC said that the body of the deceased was discovered the following day.

"The deceased's body was taken to Njombe Regional Hospital mortuary for preservation pending burial arrangements," he said. He added that preliminary investigations have indicated that the old man died after gulping down a lot of water.

Police are still investigating the matter in a quest to establish the circumstances that surround the death of the old man. In another incident, a Standard Six pupil at Bunju 'B' Primary School in Kinondoni Municipality, identified as Halid Juma (13), was knocked to death by a car on New Year Eve.

A man was injured seriously in the same incident which occurred on Bagamoyo Road. Kinondoni Regional Police Commander (RPC), Charles Kenyela, said in the city yesterday that the pupil was knocked to death by a Toyota Corolla with registration number T 551 AHD at 12:05 am.

"We are holding the Toyota Corolla's driver, Vincent Shayo, who is aged 28 years for questioning in connection with the accident," said the RPC. He said that the injured pedestrian, who was identified as Rajabu Juma (45), was taken to Mwananyamala Hospital for medical treatment.

The RPC added that the deceased's body has been preserved in the same hospital. He further said that another truck driver who has been identified as Jerasi Bgali (56) died when his Fuso lorry with registration number T 392 AQS overturned along Bagamoyo Road at JKT Tegeta area in Kinondoni Municipality on the same day. "Three lorry passengers suffered wounds.

They were taken to Mwananyamala Hospital for medical treatment," he said. He said that the body of the deceased has been taken to the same hospital for preservation pending burial arrangements and that the police were still investigating the incident to establish the cause of the accident.

Elsewhere, a man whose identity was not established immediately, aged between 45 and 50 was found dead in a TMC Dispensary toilet at Buguruni Rozana area in Ilala Municipality on the same day.

According to Ilala Regional Police Commander (RPC), Marietha Minangi, the man had asked a security guard at the dispensary if he could use the toilet at 10:30 pm. "The Dispensary personnel decided to break the toilet door when the man overstayed in the toilet and failed to respond to knocks on the door," she said.

She said the man was found dead but had no wounds. His body was taken to Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) for postmortem. Police are still investigating the matter to establish the cause of the death. "The man was found with different tablets in his trouser pockets.
