Kenya: 40 Co-Operative Members Charged With Trespassing On Land

More than 40 members of Katheka Kai co-operative society in Machakos were yesterday charged with trespass. The allegedly trespassed on more than 5,000 acres of land owned by Muambi Estate Property Ltd .

They all denied thecharges before Machakos senior resident magistrate LM Simiyu. Defence lawyer Makundi asked the court for lenient bond terms.

They were released on a Sh1,000 bail. The accused were arrested by the police for allegedly holding a meeting on the land in dispute over the festive season and were given free bond to attend court yesterday.

Due to the large number of the accused persons, they have been grouped into four where the first one will appear for hearing on January 22while the second will be on January 24.

The third and fourth group will have their cases heard on January 28 and February 7 respectively though they will all take mention on January 11.
