Kenya: Coach Attacks Referee in Obama Cuptie in Busia

A football coach yesterday created a scene when he roughed up a match referee after his team was knocked out of the Obama Cup youth tournament in Nambale, Busia County.

Busia combined tactician Peter Ogutu was incensed after his team was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Bwaliro FC who beat them 1-0 at ACK Nambale primary school ground.

After the tension charged match, Ogutu who is also Oserian FC trainer confronted centre referee, John Okello and vented his anger by slapping him on the face. Tournament chairman, John Opondo said the referee was saved from further punishment by other match officials and fans. Opondo, who is also the FKF Busia sub branch treasurer, termed the incident as unfortunate.

The federation official said they had summoned Ogutu to show cause why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for attacking the match official. Opondo lauded Western Provincial Mini-league champions Mumcop FC for displaying sportsmanship even after losing to minnows Bwaliro 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Obama youth tournament.
