Kenya: Outcry Over Mara Conservancy Contract

Trans Mara residents are up in arms over plans by the Trans Mara County Council to renew a 10-year contract with the Mara Conservancy without consulting them.

The Mara Conservancy was contracted by the council to manage Mara Triangle section of Maasai Mara National Game Reserve on its behalf. The contract still has three years to run.

The Local government ministry has already issued a circular to all local authorities instructing them not to renew leases or existing agreements with other organisations or transfer any property in until after the general election.

Former cabinet minister and Narok senate aspirant Julius Sunkuli, through his facebook page, called on all Narok aspirantsto reject the contract renewal.

"I am calling on my fellow contestants for various positions to stand up against this ill intentioned move and I will be personally collect 100 000 signatures from wananchi to oppose this," said the aspirant.
