Uganda: Lawmaker Bitekyerezo Released On Bond

Mbarara Municipality MP, Dr. Medard Bitekyerezo was Thursday released on police bond after writing a statement at the Special Investigations Unit in Kireka.

Four fellow legislators, Naome Kabasharira (Ntungamo), Rose Akol (Bukedea) Raphael Magyezi (Igara West) and Ndorwa West MP David Bahati stood surety for the MP who smiled all the way after regaining his freedom.

Dr. Bitekyerezo had been summoned together with others including Dr. Sam Lyamoki, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi and others to appear at the SIU in connection with the death of Butaleja woman MP, Celinah Nebanda.

The MP arrived at the SIU at about 9.00am and was released at about 1.00PM after writing a statement.

"I was called by police, I reported here this morning and I have written a statement but I don't know the case against me," he told journalists.

The MP also wondered why the police were going for such MPs, saying they were executing their duties when they were asked by Parliament to perform some duties in the quest to establish the cause of fellow legislator, Nebanda.
