Tanzania: Up Go Taifa Queens in World Rankings

TANZANIA has moved up by two positions in the International Federation of Netball Association (IFNA) rankings issued recently.

According to the world rankings, Tanzania stood at 17th position from the 19th position, being fourth among African countries. The latest list has been updated on December 21, 2012 and includes matches up to December 8, 2012.

The standing is courtesy of the national netball team, Taifa Queens impressive performance especially after the team's recent victory in the six nations tournament in Singapore. To attain the stand, Tanzania managed 1,205 points and leapfrogged other prominent countries like Ireland (29), Singapore (19), Malaysia (24), Switzerland (33), Namibia (26), Zambia (23), Sri Lanka (22) and USA (18).

However, Tanzania Amateur Netball Association, CHANETA Acting Secretary General, Rose Mkisi said they expected even higher placement in the rankings. She said however, they will work for the best.

"We have to enroll for various ranking competition so that we put ourselves in good chance to take part in next year's Commonwealth Games," said Mkisi. To compete in the Commonwealth Games, the senior teams have to be in top ten positions in the rankings.

According to the rankings, Australia, New Zealand, England, Jamaica, Malawi, South Africa, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Wales are the top ten respectively. IFNA named the teams which currently have a rating in the system and could become ranked once they have played eight matches as Chinese Taipei, Grenada, Hong Kong, Maldives, Pakistan, Swaziland, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Thailand and Uganda.

Meanwhile, Isles JKU has maintained its impressive win at the ongoing Mapinduzi netball tournament after thrashing KVZ 48-34 in a thrilling game at the Gymkhana courts in Zanzibar. It was difficult to predict the winner from the throw off as they attacked in turn.

As they went for the breather the score board was reading 10-9 in favour of the winners. In another game at the same venue Mafunzo got a walkover that goes with 60 goals and two points after Ikulu failed to show up for the game. Other teams in the netball tournament are Sogea and Polisi Morogoro.
