The election of Mayors for Banjul City Council and the Kanifing Municipal Council, and councillors for the 114 wards in the eight Local Government Councils of the country is set for Thursday 4th April 2013, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced.

Ahead of the polls, the IEC also announced that it would embark on a massive countrywide voter education exercise, beginning Monday 7th January through 3rd April 2013.

Speaking at a press conference attended by political party representatives and members of the diplomatic corps held at the Election House on Thursday, Mustapha Carayol, Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, stated that nomination of candidates shall take place from the 14th March to 16th March 2013 between the hours of 8am and 4pm.

This, he added, will be done in the offices of the IEC in Banjul, Kanifing, Brikama, Kerewan, Mansakonko, Janjanbureh and Basse.

"Public scrutiny of candidates' nomination documents will take place on 17th March 2013 at the aforementioned Regional Electoral Offices," he stated.

According to him, the campaign period for the election is from 20th March to 2nd April 2013.

The IEC chairman used the occasion to urge all players in the electoral process to adhere to the laid down principles and ethics of election campaigning.
