In its effort to buttress the gender empowerment in the country, a local organization, Women Network for the Promotion of Gender in the Transport Sector of Liberia has certificated some 24 youth girls and women in tri-cycle riding upon completion of a weeklong training workshop.
According to the President of the organization, Madam Mariom Mendimasa Nimely, the workshop was intended to provide training for women as a means of empowering them to compete with their male counterparts in the transport sector.
She said the workshop commenced on December 5-10 in Bo-Waterside Tewor District, Grand Cape Mount County while the continuation of the workshop was held from December 14-19 in Monrovia, Montserrado County.
The women empowerment advocate disclosed that the exercise depending on the availability of support from their partners and donors will target all the 15 sub-political divisions of Liberia with its concept of bringing women from all diverse backgrounds.
"It's by time that women get involved in the transport sector of the country, and to also form part of the policy formulation and as such, we are doing all we can to sensitize them," Madam Nimely said.
Madam Nimely who has been at the center of women empowerment over the years, further disclosed that plans are afoot for the establishment of a training center for women where they will be trained and prepared for the job market.
She highly commended the German International Cooperation (GIZ) for the level of assistance provided the organization for the successful implementation of the program. She also praised the police for facilitating the safety training component to the trainees for the five days.
Madam Mariom Mendimasa Nimely then raised the flag of appeal to their partners and donors for their support to buttress the effort of the GIZ as her organization intends to intensify the training of women, adding, if this is done, it will also help to buttress government's poverty reduction strategy as initiated by the Ellen led administration.
