Luanda — The Angolan MP, Boaventura Cardoso, Friday in Luanda said that the 4 January 1961 must be commemorated all over the country as a homage to the victims of the killing of Baixa de Kassanje, in northwestern Malanje province, Angop learnt.
Speaking to the privately-owned Luanda Antena Commercial (LAC) radio broadcasting station, as part of the celebrations of the 52th anniversary of the date, the official said that of the mentioned killing, little has been done in the country for the revival of the memory of the event.
He thus defended a permanent memory of the historical dates, such as the 4 January 1961, that was the threshold of the beginning of the armed struggle against the Portuguese colonialism, so that the young generations learn and never forget the events that led to the proclamation of the country's independence on 11 November 1975.
The killing was triggered by the uprising of local peasants of Baixa de Kassanje cotton plantations, in northern Malanje province, that was influenced by the independence of the then Belgium Congo, currently the Democratic Republic of Congo, procliamed on 30 June 1960.
