By Reuben Olita, 7 January 2013
A 26-year-old pregnant woman in Teso North died at the weekend after failing to get services in public hospitals for more than a week. Dorcas Okiring was in labour at Kocholia District Hospital but was rushed to a private hospital in Awaat due to the nurses strike.
The proprietor of the private institution referred her to Bungoma District Hospital for a caesarian operation after her condition worsened. There were no nurses to attend to her. She was rushed to St Domiano Hospital where she underwent an operation but died three hours later. The child survived.
