Gambia: GFA to Finalise League Sponsorship Deal

The Gambian Premier League could finally get a much awaited sponsorship this week after the Normalisation Committee of the Gambia Football Association announced that negotiations to that effect has delayed the start of the new season for another fortnight.

It is expected that telecommunication giants Gamtel/Gamcel will come up with a lucrative sponsorship package for the league and negotiations are expected to be concluded Thursday. The final agreement will be announced by the GFA after the meeting on Thursday "when all the clubs and grounds would be fully informed on the benefits accrued to them on the sponsorship".

It is the second time that the football association is announcing a delay to the start of the 2012/13 Gambian football since last month. The season was expected to kick-off on the weekend of the 28th of December before it was pushed forward to 5th January. It was again called off and now it has emerged that the delay could be a blessing in disguise.

Announcing the latest development through its Media Officer, Bakary Baldeh, the Normalisation Committee of The Gambia Football Association says it regrets to inform the general public that the proposed commencement of the 2012/13 GFA League season initially scheduled for the 5th of January, 2013 is now being deferred to the 19th of January,2013.

According to the Normalisation Committee, this development is necessitated by unfinished business talks between the GFA and its potential league sponsors Gamtel/Gamcel with regards to the sponsorship deal. However, it added, the GFA marketing Committee is working very closely to agree on a binding document with Gamtel/Gamcel and have further agreed to conclude the discussions by the 10th of January, 2013 when all the clubs and grounds would be fully informed on the benefits accrued to them on the sponsorship.

The dispatch from The GFA Normalisation Committee also stated that it regrets the development but wants to assure all that the Committee is determined to commence the 2012/13 season with a firm sponsorship deal which will be beneficial to all stakeholders throughout the country. It concluded that while The Gambia Football Association recognises "your usual cooperation and partnership", it also solicits your help for a much bigger publicity of this new development.
