Zimbabwe: All Set for HAB Elections

ALL is set for the Harare Athletics Board elections to be held this weekend at Prince Edward School in Harare. The elections are pencilled for Sunday and all posts from the chairman, vice chairman, secretary,

vice secretary, treasurer, officials co-ordinator, coaches co-ordinator, women committee chairperson and two committee members positions are up for grabs.

Sebastian Garikai leads the current board as the chairperson and their term of office comes to an end this weekend with the elections set to usher a new executive.

HAB secretary-general, Silas Muringani said they have already received the nominations for the various posts.

"According to our constitution, we are supposed to have our elections after every four years and for this year we have set January 13 as the date for the elections.

"The board will be elected by clubs within the province that were affiliated by March 31 2011. They will be represented by their chairperson and the secretary-general.

"We have already sent out the notification of the election and we are going to normalise our constitution because currently it reads clubs instead of districts.

"We received nominations from 11 clubs of the 13 we have meaning that there are two that did not forward their nominations.

"Our membership spreads to primary schools, secondary schools and community clubs," said Muringani.

Garikai has been nominated for the chairperson position together with Muringani while for the vice-chairperson post the nominees are Phineas Zinhiwa, Omega Kakora, Fungai Gwekwerere, Walter Charinda and Garikai.

Muringani has also been nominated for the secretary-general position's along with Gwekwerere and Charinda.

Ambrose Chinyoka, Iris Marisa, Dasmata Manyanga and Zinhiwa have been nominated for the treasurer's post.

Muringani noted that although he has been nominated for the chairperson post he is not going to contest for it as he is firmly eyeing the secretary-general position leaving a strong possibility for Garikai to be retained as the chairperson unopposed.
